HP claims that its Spectre laptop, unveiled April 5, is the world's thinnest laptop. The Spectre is as thin as a AAA battery. Most of today's laptops are plenty portable. But HP's latest device proves that PC manufacturers are yet to dig ways to make their devices thinner and lighter still.

The Spectre measures 10.4 millimeters (0.41 inches) thick. This would mean that it's slimmer than the 12-inch MacBook (0.52 inches), MacBook Air (0.68 inches) and Dell XPS 13 (0.59 inches) at their thickest points. It's also thinner than the 0.52-inch Razer Blade Stealth. HP's new notebook looks like a sleek, general purpose laptop, with an advertised nine-hour battery life, 13-inch HD 1920 x 1080 resolution display, and sixth generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor.

The Spectre doesn't house any hybrid features like similar products from other companies, some of which include screens that can detach from their keyboards or twist and turn to function like a tablet. But the Spectre's simplicity and premium design make it a potential competitor to Apple's MacBook Air.The Spectre will be available for pre-order on April 25 for $1,169.99 before it hits Best Buy stores on May 22 for $1,249.99.The intention of the new Spectre device are meant to attract people who care about power: The Spectre is equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of memory, and about 10 hours of battery life. And for music lovers, HP tapped Bang & Olufsen to give its laptop credit in the audio department.

HP describes the Spectre as being "more artisan than manufactured" in a promo video. HP is in need of a catalyst for its slumping PC division. In the last three months of 2015, HP reported a 11% slump in laptop sales and a 14% slip in desktop sales.

HP's combative talk is an optimistic positive sign for competition in classic laptop designs. At a time when everyone from Lenovo through Microsoft and even Apple and Google is developing hybrid and convertible designs, Dell has asserted itself as the leader among conventional Windows laptops with its standard-setting XPS 13 line.

Many people prefer the simplicity of a laptop that simply works as a laptop which is why Apple introduced the refreshed and simplified MacBook last year and HP is preparing to make a renewed effort to appeal to them with its new hardware.
