Washington Wizards John Wall Dedicates Game to Young Cancer Friend
The Washington Wizards barely defeated the Boston Celtics 133-132 in double-overtime this past Monday. The Wizards' star, John Wall, scored the team's last 10 points to get the victory, which he heartwarmingly dedicated to a young friend who lost her battle with cancer.
"This is for Miyah, one of my close friends that I lost that I met last year. It's just tough, man, you see a little kid that fights so hard with cancer and can't beat it," Wall said in a post-game interview. "This game is for her."
When asked if Miyah (full name: Damiyah Telemaque-Nelson) touched his heart, all Wall could do was nod, hunch over and cry. She passed away on Monday from Burkitt's lymphoma, which is an extremely rare form of cancer. She was only six-years-old. Wall found out about her death prior to the game.
"This game was really meant for her. It would've been an even tougher day to lose it," said Wall according to ESPN. "I just went into a mode where I didn't want to lose this game."
Miyah and her friends had reached out to Wall last year via a social media campaign. In the campaign, Miyah expressed her desire to meet Wall and ask him to help her meet Nicky Minaj. Wall heard about her campaign and agreed to help the little girl. Since then, Wall has reportedly kept in touch with the young girl. He has also written her name on his shoes all season, CSN Washington reported.
"I'm a shy person, I'm real quiet, but it was great," Wall said last year according to the Washington Post. "You never want to miss an opportunity to put a smile on a kid's face."
After the game, Wall tweeted this message:
"If you were blessed to meet and get to know Miyah you know how special of a little girl she was. I'm saddened by the news but I know that she's in a better place. Keep her family in your prayers. I'll definitely miss my buddy. Rest In Peace Miyah."
