Selena Gomez News: ‘Revival’ Singer To Produce ‘Latina Empire’ Series on Freeform Based on Real Events

Selena Gomez has been in headlines for many different reasons. Recent news now reports that the singer and actress will work behind the camera as a producer for a new show, a "Latina empire," on Freeform. The show is said to be based on real events.

It was just announced that Gomez, along with Aaron Kaplan, from Kapital Entertainment, will start the new show on the network formerly known as ABC Family, Deadline reports.

Though the show is rumored to be a Latina version of Empire, Deadline reported the show, "is set in a low-income Latino neighborhood and is told through the eyes of an 18-year-old girl destined for greatness." Gomez won't be acting in the drama.

Kaplan got the idea when he heard a speech from an LA high school senior. The producer was attending The Zimmer Children's Museum Discovery Award Dinner last November where he watched Ana Cobarrubias give a speech about defying society's expectations for people like her who come from low-income neighborhoods, according to MTV. The heart warming speech ended with a standing ovation...and now a TV show.

Reportedly, Kaplan reached out to Karey Burke, Freeform's EVP Programming and Development, after being inspired by her speech. The two then connected with Gomez who agreed to be the producer for the show.

Cobarrubias will also work together to create the drama as an consultant. During her speech, she expressed her dream to work in cinematic arts in order to tell the stories of people who come out of low-income neighborhoods just like her.

Latina reports that Gomez's mom, Mandy Teefey, will also work as a producer on the team.

This is not the first time Gomez produces a TV show. The "Revival" singer has teamed up with her mother to start a Netflix series titled "13 Reasons Why," based on the best-selling young adult novel by Jay Asher.
