Why Did Hillary Clinton Laugh At References To Bill's Affairs?
Now why does Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton find her husband's past indiscretions so amusing?
It happened when she had a "sit-down discussion" with the mother of a 28-year-old woman who died in her jail cell last year. Sandra Bland's mother, Geneva Ridgefield, was with Hillary at the Milwaukee Baptist Church on Tuesday,
The ex-President Bill Clinton's close encounters with various girlfriends was discussed. Ridgefield talks about various critiques of Clinton by voters.
"They say, 'I dunno, how can you vote for Hillary? She lied,'" Ridgefield said. "I say, 'Girl, did she lie to you?' And why you talking about something that happened when her husband was the President, so she was First lady at the time, and she has apologized for those actions."
"And I will tell you, if I was to be held accountable for everything my man did, we'd have a problem."
That was enough to send Clinton into uproarious peals of laughter, slapping her knee. Why did she laugh so much?
Obviously, it was because Clinton did not know whether to laugh or to cry. Nor do we.
The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal happened 20 years ago, which was the pre-Internet era. Still, it haunted him quite a lot, and will haunt Hillary too. Again and repeated again.
Conservative websites like the Daily Caller were thrilled by the reaction and the underlying signals from it: "Hillary let off a cackle as if they were talking about husbands who don't put the toilet seat back down or forgot an anniversary," Doug Powers of MichelleMalkin.com wrote.
She rapped Clinton for sticking to her marriage, sarcastically calling her a "role model for strong, independent women everywhere."
Other, more sympathetic commentators put their votes for Hillary: "But we do know that accusing a woman of being morally corrupt or untrustworthy because, at some point, her husband violated her own trust, is so stupid as to not even merit commentary. And so is asking her to take lashing after lashing for her husband's bad behavior."
Looking beyond the melee, one thing is clear, at least. Clinton was certainly not amused at her husband's behavior. She was either over-reacting, in order to deflect attention from the issue, or was trying to feign indifference, in order to brush it lightly aside like a sport.
