Tim Tebow News And Rumors Update: Football Star Hinted Participation In Politics In The Future
Tim Tebow could be America's next top politician.
Football star Tim Tebow is at least 'intrigued' at the idea as he hinted at a possible future in politics in an interview with Fox News Channel anchor and correspondent Ainsley Earhardt in early March.
"If there's a chance you can make a difference someday in something, then that would be intriguing," free agent NFL quarterback Tebow said in the interview for the morning news show Fox and Friends that featured a Tim Tebow Foundation charity golf tournament.
If Tebow decides to try his luck in politics, he will be following in the footsteps of fellow American footballers Tom Osborne, Jon Runyan and J.C. Watts who became U.S. congressmen, and NBA greats Dave Bing and Kevin Johnson who were both elected City Mayors in Detroit and Sacramento, respectively, to name a few of the select pro-athletes-cum-politicians listed by the Business Insider.
Tim Tebow is known in the football world and beyond for his outspoken Christian faith reinforced by the internet meme 'tebowing' defined by tebowing.com as a verb meaning "to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different".
It must be noted, however, that in the same interview Tim Tebow first answered in the negative further implying that his plans to run for office might not happen at present.
"Now, no, in this time of my life..." said Tebow, who at 28 years old, is qualified only to run for Congress or lower positions.
This is not the first time that Tebow's name is pulled into politics. His strong Christian values, his pro-abstinence, anti-abortion stance has had him touted as possible 'political savior' for Florida, notably by blogger Steven Kurlander in his September 2013 piece for Context Florida.
This endorsement came in the heels of the New England Patriots's cutting of the quarterback, suggesting the Heisman Trophy winner might fare better in the political arena.
"The amazing Tebow marketing machine has already established him as the most devout athlete in America, and consequently he already has a devoted following of evangelical Christians who represent a huge voting bloc in Florida," wrote Steven Kurlander.
Almost three years on, Tebow is still not playing with any NFL team and is struggling to elicit interest from any of the pro football teams. He is currently an SEC Network college football analyst and is actively involved in his foundation, according to his website timtebow.com.
While there is little hope for Tebow at an NFL re-entry, the same blogger Steven Kurlander has not lost hope on his prophesized "political savior". Kurlander told MSNBC on Wednesday, "I do think that Tebow would present a valuable alternative in terms of his moral and athletic background as a new model of decency and discipline for the GOP in Florida to counter Trump's successful shock political approach."
