'The Ranch' Review and News Update: This Netflix Series Flatters with Its Family and Failure Concept
The Netflix comedy series, "The Ranch" premiers today with its first batch of ten episodes releasing simultaneously.
The series has been in the news lately, given Ashton Kutcher's presence in the lead role but there is much more to it than the handsome hunk and his reunion with "That 70's Show" co-star Danny Masterson, who plays his elder brother in the Netflix show.
Debra Winger and Sam Elliot, as the parents of the brothers, are in great form and their chemistry is truly worth watching. As the estranged couple who are very much in love but unable to reconcile their differences, they lend a poignant touch to the drama and also bring comic relief.
Depicting country life with all its mundane madness, it tells the story of Colt Bennett, a failed footballer who returns to the ranch after spending 15 years away from the family. As the washed out semi-pro footballer grappling with personal demons, (he has jilted his high school girlfriend and still cannot get over it), Kutcher performs admirably.
Danny Masterson as big brother Rooster lends good support playing out the responsible elder of the family. But he is also a human with imperfections. So, Colt's return is a welcome relief for him as he will get a party buddy now and can escape the judgmental father's tyranny.
More into emotion than comedy, as per sources, this series has its heart in the right place as it deals with the loss and failure of ragged people who are moving on with their lives, carrying out their respective occupations, trying to make sense of events that unfold in their lives.
The new love interest of Colt- Heather (Kelli Goss), a waitress at her mother's bar, is also a treat to watch and the script deserves praise for developing her character from a butt of joke to a woman who matters.
Overall, The Ranch is a nice family drama that touches your heartstrings and also manages (to a fair extent) to make you laugh.
