The Oculus rift: A massive success or a major fail?

Facebook invested about two billion USD on Oculus rift in joining development to bring out their new virtual head set gear "Oculus Rift".

Rift uses state of the art displays and optics designed specifically for VR. Its high refresh rate and low-persistence display work together with its custom optics system to provide incredible visual fidelity and an immersive, wide field of view.Rift's advanced display technology combined with its precise, low-latency constellation tracking system enables the sensation of presence; the feeling as though you're actually there.

The Oculus Rift is proving to be about as divisive as virtual reality itself. Critics have begun to love the headset. That's pretty much on par with consumer sentiment at this point. Hard core gamers, developers, and definitely younger audiences are all but thrilled about the technology, but there are definitely a whole lot of them who don't see a lot of reason to dump down $600 for an Oculus Rift. While the virtual reality gear has been widely expected for years now, there are hardly any consumer reviews for a device which has been hyped and promoted.

There are ongoing supply constraints, with even the CEO of Facebook is his live video hinting that most of the shipments would be scheduled soon. Oculus sent just a limited number of units to critics, focusing its efforts instead on fulfilling pre-orders.According to reviewers, the hardware was surprisingly well-made and delivered rock-solid comfortable virtual reality which it did pretty easily.

One tech-focused blog however advised most buyers to the call-off purchases for now till the price point lowered down with new improvements etc., developers and early buyers would be enjoying the system. One of the engage reviewer after spending about a week with one of the devices mentioned about the approach to virtual reality was indeed the real deal. He also mentioned about how it was easy to be setup with already a few games in the market with apps.

The Wall street journal however declared the Rift to be unfit for mainstream end-users. The New York times admitted it to terming the rift "brimming with potential" and "clunky". They were disappointed with the initial catalog. One lead consumer-tech reviewer was also not happy with the VR gear claiming there wasn't anything much to do except about thirty games along with a few apps available. He also mentioned that Oculus eventually had to get a lager and a more diverse set of content to transit the initial audience of gamer geeks.
