MLB Rumors: Detroit Tigers Trade Bryan Holaday For Texas Rangers Players, Bittersweet Manager Says
MLB trade rumors are going around, but there are some that have been confirmed. MLB Detroit tigers team traded Bryan (Doc) Holaday for two players from the Rangers.
The players that the Texas Rangers traded were right-hander, Myles Jaye, and back-up catcher, Bobby Wilson. The trade came when the Tigers couldn't accommodate any longer according to Christian Post. Detroit Tigers had just signed Jarrod Saltalamacchi so it wasn't an option for them to have three catchers. They decided to trade Holaday.
Now, Tigers' manager, Brad Ausmus, shares his bittersweet feelings towards the trade wishing the team "hadn't lost him," reports Detroit Free Press.
"Doc, he's one of the most likeable people I've been around in the game," Ausmus shared. "I guess the bright side is, he's going to go play for a team that's near his home. He's going to be at the big league level. From that standpoint, it's good for him. I'm happy for him. I wish we hadn't lost him, and I'm going to miss him."
However, the trade is also good for Holaday who will now be closer to his home.
"I think he's excited about the opportunity and the chance to be close to home," he continued.
The catcher had graduated from Texas Christian University when he played for the Horned Frogs, according to ESPN. There he had won an award, the Johnny Bench Award, the most prestigious college individual award for a catcher.
Holaday also expressed gratitude for his time being on the Detroit Tigers team and great expectations he had heading back to his home state.
"I really appreciate everything the Tigers have done for me," Holaday told MLive. "The people throughout the organization have been amazing and helped me develop as a player and a person. I'm going to miss everyone. I've had some great relationships that will continue.
"That being said, I couldn't be more excited. I dreamed of being a Texas Ranger growing up and it's just an unexplainable crazy feeling getting to go home and play for them. I thank Detroit for giving me the opportunity to play baseball and I can't wait to get to do that in Texas."
According to CBS Sports, Holiday was on trading block all offseason while the Rangers were looking for "big-league catching depth" so the trade made sense.
