Apple has officially released its annual list of the best apps for iPhone and iPad in 2014. According to the list, Elevate Brain Training is the iPhone app of the year while the Pixelmator is the iPad app of the year.

Elevate Brain Training is a "personal trainer for the brain" and has been downloaded more than 5 million times since its launch. Although the app can be downloaded for free, users are charged $5 monthly to unlock the entire range of brain games. Last year, Apple had selected Duolingo as the iPhone app of the year, aimed at teaching different languages to its users.

Instagram's Hyperlapse is the runner-up iPhone app of the year.

Threes - a popular puzzle app - has been named Apple iPhone game of the year.

Pixelmator - Apple's iPad app of the year - brings "desktop class" image editor on iPad.

Monument Valley is the iPad game of the year.

Apple also released a list of music and media that were a hit on iTunes.  Beyoncé  has been named the best artist of 2014, while Taylor Swift's platinum smash 1989 is the best album in 2014. Apple voted Iggy Azalea's Fancy as the best song of 2014.

Apple also included some honorable mentions that were not apps of the year, but are worth checking out. The list included Yahoo News Digest, Swiftkey Keyboard and Facebook's Paper

As of now, App Store has 1.3 million apps and has seen more than 85 billion total downloads since its launch.

Unsurprisingly, the most-downloaded free iPhone app of the year is Facebook Messenger. YouTube is the most-downloaded free iPad app of the year.
