Pregnant Mom With Brain Cancer Postpones Treatment To Save Unborn Baby
Kim and Phil Vaillancourt had two biological children, but then also began an exciting process of getting three more---through adoption. However, they learnt another thrilling news---that Kim was pregnant too. The whole family eagerly waited for the baby.
It was on Christmas day, barely two days after they went to court for adoption, that Kim visited the hospital to learn about another shattering news: her life, as well as that of her unborn child, were at risk, according to popsugar.
Having been diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma, a tough-to-treat cancer, she quickly went through surgery so that her tumors could be removed. A holiday break had made it full house, with all five children at home from school. Still, she decided to go to hospital to treat her nausea and headaches, which she feared for her developing child.
That visit saved her, so she is grateful that her baby gave her a chance to live.
The baby boy, who they plan to name Wyatt Eli, will be given a chance too. Even though she knows that glioblastoma will lead to rapidly shooting tumors reappearing in a few months, Kim plans to postpone chemotherapy and radiation for a fortnight after Wyatt is born.
She knows that the treatment would help her but harm her baby if she did not deliver him. "The baby saved me. Now it's my turn to save him," Kim said to CBS News.
Meanwhile, she also visits the doctor for MRIs after every two weeks to search for new tumors.
The family's biggest treatment is the belief in miracles. Not the "median survival rate of 14 months" that doctors explain may be the reality.
