With Rafael Nadal and Stan Warinka out of the tournament after their early round exits the top contender Novak Djokovic seems confident in clinching the Miami Open title. Novak Djokovic defeated Joao Sousa in the third round of the tournament. He registered the win in straight sets 6-4,6-1 here at the Miami Open in Biscayne, Fla. Novak faced a stiff competition in the first set however came back strongly and sealed the first set, he dint let that repeat in the second set as he comfortable surged ahead and sealed the second with a margin 6-1 and sent Joao Sousa packing home.
Roger Federer had withdrawn from the competition due to stomach virus. His opponent Horacio took full advantage of it and beat Fernando Verdasco in a three setter. He beat verdasco in a close match of 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Later in other matches No.7 seeded Tomas Berdych defeated Steve Johnson in a close match after saving all the ten break points he faced during the match. He finally beat Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3. Another top contender Richard Gasquet beat No.20 Benoit Paore in straight sets. He dint face much resistance and won the game by 6-3, 6-0. The tournaments qualifier qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka dint seem to impress as he lost to No.14 Dominic Thiem in straight sets and finished his campaign after suffering a defeat of 6-2, 6-2. In another match between No. 15 DavidGoffin and No. 19 Viktor Troicki it was David Goffin who saw the final smile in his face as he easily surged past Viktor Troicki's challenge by crushing him 6-1, 6-1.
However in the women' s rounds of Miami open, Victoria Azarenka kept her hopes alive after beating the qualifier Magda Linette 6-3, 6-0 and kept her eyes on the third championship title. During the match she held onto every service and overcame her five double faults before registering her straight set win.
For the first time Madison Keys of Florid ranked No. 22, reached the pre-quarters of the tournament and kept her hopes alive. It was for the first time she reached this stage prior to her seven appearances in the same tournament. She achieved this feat by surprising No. 9 Roberta Vinci in a straight match which saw a score of 6-4, 6-4.
