MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Players with Trade Value
Some of the biggest names in the MLB have already signed new contracts this offseason. However, trades are far from over. Here are five players that could have a potentially high trade value.
1. Francisco Liriano, Pitcher, Pittsburgh Pirates
Out of all the available pitchers, left-handed starter Jon Lester has arguably garnered the most attention. Jon Heyman with CBS Sports cited sources, stating that the Chicago Cubs have offered Lester $138 million over the span of six years. Lester's former team, the Boston Red Sox, have reportedly shown their willingness to offer a similar deal.
Since Lester can only go to one team, teams will have to consider other players, such as left handed pitcher Francisco Liriano. Liriano has had two stellar years with the pirates with 333 strikeouts in over 323-1/3 innings. He finished the 2014 season with a 3.38 ERA. Although Liriano will certainly not cost as much as Lester, he could become a valued asset.
2. Chase Headley, Third Baseman, New York Yankees
The market for a third baseman is looking pretty light after the Red Sox signed Pablo Sandoval. Teams in need of an infielder could be interested in Chase Headley, who finished the year with the Yankees. The Yankees had originally stated that one of their priorities was to resign Headley. However, rumors suggested that the Yankees have backed down, and now, Headley could be up for grabs.
Headley finished the 2014 season with a batting average of .243, 49 RBI and 13 homeruns. He was ranked seventh on CBS Sports' 2015 Top MLB Free Agents Available - Position Players.
3. Asdrubal Cabrera, Second Baseman/Shortstop, Washington Nationals
Asdrubal Cabrera has proven that he has quite a powerful bat as a middle infielder. In four straight seasons, Cabrera has had at least 31 doubles and 14 homeruns. Despite his ability to play in the infield, his defense has been questionable.
Since there are not many other free agents available in these positions, Cabrera could expect a decent contract. Rumors are that the Nationals and the Oakland Athletics have looked into Cabrera.
4. Edinson Volquez, Pitcher, Pittsburgh Pirates
Edison Volquez is another pitcher from the Pirates that could have some value this offseason. Although Volquez has not been the most consistent pitcher, he finished the 2014 season with a record of 13-7 and a 3.04 ERA.
Rumors are that the Minnesota Twins could be interested in acquiring Volquez, who does not require draft pick compensation. Another report stated that the Pirates have made an offer to Volquez.
5. Emilio Bonifacio, Utility, Atlanta Braves
Teams looking to add a utility player could be in the competition for Emilio Bonifacio, who split the 2014 season with the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves.
During this season, Bonifacio batted .259 with 24 RBI, 17 doubles and three homeruns. More impressively, Bonifacio stacked up 26 stolen bases.
Being a utility player, Bonifacio has played at second and third base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions. Teams that are rumored to be interested in this free agent include the Yankees and the Oakland A's.
