Sacramento Kings Trade Rumors: Derrick Williams will be put on Display
Derrick Williams of the Sacramento Kings could be expected to be traded before the February deadline. Over the past few weeks, Williams has spent more time on the court, generating attention. This move, according to Rui Thomas with Cowbell Kingdom, was designed to put Williams "on display."
Thomas wrote: "It's no secret that Williams' time is coming to an end in Sacramento. He is regarded around the league as a reclamation project at best, and at worst, a bust. The Kings can sell him to other clubs as an expiring deal, or let him walk when free agency begins."
March Bass of Fansided, added that for the Kings, Williams is expendable. He wrote: "Simply put, he has no home in the NBA due to his inability to serve as a true fit at any position. He's too weak of a rebounder and post defender to be set as a power forward, and as a 29.6 percent career shooter from deep, he's no threat on the wing either."
Rumors are circulating that this is the right time for the Kings to trade Williams, who will become a restricted free agent. According to Thomas, Williams could be an asset for "middling and bottom-tier clubs would love to trade for Williams' contract to shed long-term salaries."
Although Williams' numbers have not been impressive, at 23, he is still a very young player that arguably has room to grow.
"We've all seen it," Kings' coach, Michael Malone said according to Steven Wilson with NBA.com. "He plays at his best when he's aggressive and he's confident and he gets out and runs the floor and he attacks the basket and plays above the rim."
Williams, who was the No.2 overall draft pick in 2011, joined the Kings last season. In his four-year NAB career, Williams has 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in less than 20 minutes of playtime.
