San Francisco 49ers will be keeping Colin Kaepernick

The San Francisco 49ers will not be parting ways with quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

General manager Trent Baalke said on Wednesday that when April 1 comes around, Kaepernick will definitely be on the team's roster. On that day, the entire sum of his base salary worth $11.9 million will become guaranteed. Baalke did not say, however that Kaepernick would have the starting position over Blaine Gabbert, who took over this past season.

In terms of numbers for this past season, Gabbert had a higher completion percentage, a higher per rush average, more yards passing, more touchdown passes and fewer sacks. Kaepernick, however, had a better overall quarterback rating.

"I think the good thing is we've got two guys that have gone into games who've proven they can play and Colin's done some awful good things through his career, won some big games for the San Francisco 49ers and [we] expect him to come back," Baalke said at the league's scouting combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. "The main focus right now is health, getting him healthy. He's done a good job with his rehab. Talking to the medical staff, that seems to be going very well, and [we] just look forward to getting him back and getting him working with this coaching staff."

Kaepernick, 28, is currently recovering from surgery to his left shoulder, left knee and right thumb.

Baalke added that although they are comfortable with their two quarterbacks, they are still looking.

"We're always looking, and we're certainly going to scour this draft and the free-agent market that's out there," he said. "There's obviously not a lot of quarterbacks that make it to free agency, as we know, but we're going to look at every avenue. Quarterbacks [of] all shapes and sizes have had success in this league. We're going to look at every one."

Kaepernick is under contract with the Niners through tot the 2020 season. However, there is a clause that allows the team to release him before April 1 in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

As a starter, Kapernick's record is 27-20 with 56 touchdown passes and 26 interceptions.

Both quarterbacks will be working under new coach Chip Kelly.
