Kalamazoo Shooting Spree: Some Facts About The Shooter
A rampaging Uber driver got 6 people dead in a mass shooting that occurred in a seemingly ordinary weekend in Kalamazoo. Who would have taught that an average 45-year-old Joe driving around the city in a Chevrolet HHR sport utility vehicle gunned down people at random.
"How do you go and tell the families of these victims that they weren't targeted for any reason other than they were there to be a target?" said Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeffrey Getting as quoted by NBC News.
As of press time, the local police could not establish or trace anything that would link the shooting to terrorism. In the United States, there has been a surge of random shooting perpetrated by a psychologically distressed and lone gunman.
What do we know about the suspect?
After the killing spree indeed, the police have arrested Jason Brian Dalton without a fight in downtown Kalamazoo along with a semi-automatic pistol in his possession that matches shell casings found at the crime scenes.
The police also noted that he was also picking up and dropping off passengers between the shootings. One passenger who booked an Uber ride recalled his conversation with the alleged killer.
"I kind of jokingly said to the driver, 'You're not the shooter, are you?' He gave me some sort of a 'no' response ... shook his head. I said, 'Are you sure?' And he said, 'No, I'm not, I'm just tired.' And we proceeded to have a pretty normal conversation after that," remarked the passenger who identified himself as Derek as quoted by CNN.
Meanwhile, a number of Kalamazoo residents attended a vigil held Sunday at Centerpoint Church which focused on community-led healing not hatred as people honor those who perished in the shooting.
"Just to support the community and the people who are going through a difficult time. To come together and pray is a powerful thing," remarked 24-year-old Marissa McCorry who attended the service as reported by MLive
