Pope Francis Suggests Trump is not ‘Christian,’ Trump Hits Back
Donald Trump's latest feud is with religious leader Pope Francis.
The Republican presidential hopeful has hit back at the pope's comment that suggested Trump might not be a Christian.
During the pope's trip to Mexico, he was asked about Trump's plans to build a wall at the Mexican border in order to prevent illegal migration to the United States.
The pope had responded, just three hours after he celebrated Mass with more than 200,000 people at Ciudad Juárez, stating that although he would give Trump "the benefit of the doubt" since he did not hear about the plans independently, "a person (in general) who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.
"This is not in the Gospel," the pope added, reported by FOX News.
Trump's campaign immediately responded to the pope's comment, stating in a press release, "If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS's ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful."
The Republican frontrunner also accused Mexico of using the pope to their advantage.
"The pope only heard one side of the story - he didn't see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn't see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation," Trump said and later added, "They are using the pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant."
The feud comes just a few days away from the South Carolina Republican Caucus, which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 20.
