NYPD Opens Investigation into Ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer for Alleged Assault
The New York Police Department has opened an investigation into former governor Eliot Spitzer for an alleged assault involving a young woman.
"The victim has indicated that the subject is Eliot Spitzer," the NYPD said in a statement on Sunday. "Through an ongoing investigation, we are attempting to further establish the identity of the subject and the nature of the incident."
The police have not charged Spitzer nor have they interviewed him yet.
"There is no truth to the allegation," Lisa Linden, Spitzer's spokeswoman said in an email to the news outlet.
According to media reports, the police had arrived at The Plaza hotel Saturday night at around 8 p.m. after receiving a distressed 911 call. They found a 25-year-old who had self-inflicted injuries to her wrists. The woman, who is Russian, was suffering from a breakdown after allegedly arguing with Spitzer, who she identified as her boyfriend, the New York Daily News reported.
The sources added that the woman told the police that Spitzer had choked her. One official, reported by ABC News, said that the fight appeared to have started after the woman tried to end the relationship.
It is unclear whether or not Spitzer was at the hotel when the police arrived.
The police will decide on whether or not they have enough evidence to charge Spitzer after the woman decided that she did not want to press any charges. She has reportedly left the country and is heading back to Russia.
"We have to find out what happened first, then (we) have to see if it warrants a charge," a police source said.
Spitzer was the governor of NY for 14 months before a prostitution scandal brought down his career.
