Google Saying Goodbye To Picasa And Promotes Google Photos

Search engine giant Google kills off Picasa as the company recently announced its transition plan to Google Photos. The desktop application is bound to get shut down on 15 March this year.

Picasa was an online video editing tool the tech company acquired 12 years ago. The news was not really surprising. For a while, observers noticed that the image-organizing application rarely got updates as Google put more resources in developing Google Photos.

As a consideration to users already fond of using Picasa, Google said that they may continue using the photo editing app indefinitely minus the regular patches according to a report by the Beacon Transcript.

The company also provide a migration plan to users who uploaded their family pics to Picasa Web Albums for safekeeping.

"If you have photos or videos in a Picasa Web Album today, the easiest way to still access, modify and share most of that content is to log in to Google Photos, and all your photos and videos will already be there. Using Google Photos, you can continue to upload and organize your memories, as well as enjoy other great benefits like better ways to search and share your images," said Google Photos chief Anil Sabharwal as mentioned in a report by TechAeris.

Observers say that the decision makes a lot of sense as it will enable Google to develop a better cross-platform service.

"We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products," remarked Sabharwal as quoted saying by PC World.
