Cam Newton Addresses Super Bowl Press Conference, says he hates losing
Cam Newton, the quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, has commented about his post-Super Bowl press conference, which has been the subject of many sports headlines.
In the press conference, Newton barely raised his voice above a whisper to give very short answers before deciding to walk out on the reporters. Since then, many people have criticized Newton for leaving the interview after barely three minutes.
"I'm on record as being a sore loser," Newton said reported by the Charlotte Observer. "I hate losing. You show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."
The NFL MVP defended his attitude, saying that he was very emotional after the 27-10 loss against the Denver Broncos.
He also told reporters that he is not the type of person who will do something - like give a lengthy interview after a tough loss - just because other people do it.
"I don't have to conform to what anybody wants. I am my own person," Newton explained reported by NFL.com. "I know who I am and I'm not about to conform nor bend for anybody's expectations because, your or anybody's expectations, will never exceed mine."
Newton also told reporters that he does not regret how he handled the post-Super Bowl interview.
Head coach, Ron Rivera, also defended his quarterback on Tuesday, stating, "Do I wish Cam would've handled it differently? Yes. But that's who he is. He hates to lose."
Newton was also criticized for not running into a pile to retrieve a fumble during the second half of the Super Bowl. The fumble, which was picked up Broncos T.J. Ward, led to another touchdown. Newton told reporters that he decided against jumping in for the loose ball because of the way his legs were positioned.
Newton's teammate Greg Olsen defended him.
The tight end said, according to Jonathan Jones, "If anyone wants to question Cam putting his body on the line, they obviously haven't watched up and that narrative is comical."
"When you look at the circumstances he was looking at, I have no problem with that," Rivera said to Pro Football Talk Live.
Despite the loss after a stellar season, Newton believes that they "will be back."
