Former NY Mayor Not Impressed by Beyoncé’s ‘Black Power’ Salute at Super Bowl
The Super Bowl halftime show left the crowd at the stadium and the viewers at home in shock. While many people were amazed by what Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars had planned, the former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani, was not too impressed.
"I think it was outrageous," Giuliani said specifically about Beyoncé's "Black Power" salute to FOX News (via the New York Daily News). "The halftime show I thought was ridiculous anyway. I don't know what the heck it was. A bunch of people bouncing around and all strange things. It was terrible."
Giuliani added that Beyoncé's decision to voice her support for the movement at the Super Bowl was distasteful.
"This is football, not Hollywood, and I thought it was really outrageous that she used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive," Giuliani said. "And what we should be doing in the African-American community, and all communities, is build up respect for police officers. And focus on the fact that when something does go wrong, okay. We'll work on that. But the vast majority of police officers risk their lives to keep us safe."
Beyoncé had given the symbol - a fist in the air - while performing her new song, "Formulation." The pop star's background dancers all wore black berets, which also referenced the movement that began in 1960s with the Black Panther Party taking form in 1966.
Many had expected Beyoncé to make a statement at the Super Bowl especially after she released the music video for "Formulation." In the video, the megastar had referenced to the recent cases involving police brutality against black men. In addition to her video, Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z had pledged $1.5 million to the Black Lives Matter movement, which began after numerous black male teenagers were gunned down by police despite being unarmed.
Despite Giuliani's opinions, many people had tweeted their support for Beyoncé performance.
