Two hospital employees tied to leaking New York Giants Jason Pierre-Paul's medical records have been fired.

The Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida released this statement on Friday:

"During the investigation of a breach that occurred in July 2015, Jackson Health System became a party to related litigation. It is our policy that we do not comment during pending litigation. That litigation has now been settled. As part of our investigation into the breach, it was discovered that two employees inappropriately accessed the patient's health record. That finding resulted in the termination of both employees. Protecting the privacy of our patients is a top priority at Jackson Health System. Any time we have allegations of a breach, we immediately and thoroughly investigate."

The employees who were fired were nurse Immacula Richmond and secretary Brenda Johnson.

Pierre-Paul was treated at the hospital in the summer for a fireworks accident that happened after the July 4th holidays. Early reports were claiming that Pierre-Paul had suffered a major hand injury.

While Pierre-Paul kept quiet about the extent of his injury due to the fact that he was in the middle of negotiations with the Giants, ESPN's Adam Schefter was able to get his hands on the athlete's medical records and published them, sparking a huge debate about the legality of sharing someone's health records.

Schefter had defended his decision to tweet the records.

He told Sports Illustrated Richard Deitsch, "The extent of his injuries were going to come to light, maybe that day or later that week, but soon. They're horrific injuries, incredibly unfortunate for the player. But in a day and age in which pictures and videos tell stories and confirm facts, in which sources and their motives are routinely questioned, and in which reporters strive to be as accurate as possible, this was the ultimate supporting proof.

Schefter added that he never asked anyone to get him Pierre-Paul's medical charts, but rather, someone had sent them to him.

The Giants ended up pulling their $60 million offer.

Pierre-Paul, who lost his right index finger from the injury, and the Giants were able to reach a new agreement in October. Pierre-Paul recorded 26 combined tackles with one sack.
