Report: Chip Kelly Interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers
Chip Kelly, the former head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, reportedly met with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers recently parted ways with Jim Tomsula after one year at the post.
CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco was the first one to report on the meeting, which took place on Thursday.
With the Eagles, Kelly, 52, had a 26-21 record over the span of three seasons. Although Kelly led the Eagles to two winning seasons and one playoff berth, his third season took a turn when he was given complete control over his personnel. Before the start of the 2015 season, Kelly made many questionable moves, such as trading away running back LeSean McCoy and quarterback Nick Foles that ended up not working out in the team's favor.
He was fired in prior to the season game-ender after the Eagles failed to make it to the playoffs. According to an ESPN report, Kelly had contacted the 49ers about the meeting. The meeting was also Kelly's first one since his firing.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had stated, reported by NFL.com, "This was really a three-year evaluation - a three-year evaluation of where we're heading, what is the trajectory, what is the progress or lack thereof and what did I anticipate for the foreseeable future and that's why the decision was made."
"I'm a firm believer that bad karma comes back on you," Washington Redskins wide receiver, DeSeasn Jackson, who was cut by Kelly in 2013, told The MMQB.com. "When you ruin a team like that, you do things to peoples' families, you release people, you trade people, you get rid of good players who build something with the community, with the fans, with the kids -- to have a guy come in and change up the team like that, I just believe in karma."
Jackson, who is getting ready for the NFC wild card game against the Green Bay Packers, believed that Kelly and the Eagles ran a smear campaign against him.
The 49ers have also met with Anthony Lynn, the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the 49ers will be meeting with Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator John DeFelippo on Friday.
