Lady Gaga, the "Born This Way" hitmaker, shocked the world by revealing she was raped when she was nineteen by a man twenty years older than her.

Gaga was speaking about a new song called "Swine," which is about rape and demoralization on the "Howard Stern Show," Tuesday, when Stern asked he if she was raped.

"Were you raped by a record producer? Was that what happened to you? [...] I feel like you were raped by someone," Stern prodded.

Initially,Ggaga seemed a little reluctant about discussing the topic but she did confess that she went through a lot of pain and put up with immense angst to come to terms with the fact that she was raped.

"I went through some horrific things that I'm able to laugh [at] now, because I've gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years. My music has been wonderful for me," she said.

"I was a shell of my former self at one point. I was not myself. To be fair, I was about 19. I went to Catholic school and then all this crazy stuff happened, and I was going, 'Oh, is this just the way adults are?' I was very naïve," she said referring to her rapist.

Stern asked her if she could confront the rapist today if she had to but Gaga said she was still terrified of him. She confessed to seeing him in a store in the neighborhood once and recalled how it had paralyzed her.

Gaga also said that she didn't even know she was raped and it only sunk in after four or five years. She never told anybody about the incident because she hardly realized it herself.

But the "Poker Face" singer added that she didn't want to be defined by the traumatic incident.

"I'll be damned if somebody is gonna say that every creatively intelligent thing I ever did is boiled down to one d******* that did that to me."
