Turkey Authorities Arrest Two Suspected of Planning Attack on New Year’s Eve
Two people suspected of being associated with the terrorist group, the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL, have been arrested on Wednesday in Turkey, the police stated.
The officials in the capital of Ankara believe that the two, whom the officials referred to as M.C. and A.Y., were planning out attacks on New Year's Eve in two locations near Kizilay district, according to Turkey's Anadolu news agency reported by CNN.
"They were caught before they had the opportunity to take action," said the office of the chief prosecutor of Ankara, reported by the Washington Post.
The city's government added that officers found a vest equipped with explosives and a backpack that appeared to be "ready for use" during the raid in a house located in Mamak neighborhood. There were also materials that are typically used to make bombs. The men were detained during the raid.
An investigation is currently underway and anti-terrorism police were interrogating the two.
Prior to the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, there were two bombings in Turkey that left more than 100 people dead. No terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack but Turkish officials had pointed fingers at ISIS, especially since the group has taken over a lot of areas in neighboring Syria and Iraq.
Cities throughout the world have been hyping up security to ensure that people are safe during the festivities. Ever since ISIS carried out attacks in Paris, countries have been on high alert.
In Belgium, authorities arrested two men who were suspected of plotting a terror attack in Brussels. The Belgian authorities had confiscated ISIS propaganda and military-type uniforms but did not find any weapons.
