Grizzlies Matt Barnes gets Two-Game Suspension for Off-Court Incident with Derek Fisher
The NBA announced that Memphis Grizzlies guard Matt Barnes will serve a two-game suspension for an off-court incident that occurred in October, ESPN's Chris Broussard reported. He will lost around $64,000 for in salary.
Barnes, 35 will not play in Tuesday's game against the Miami Heat and in Saturday's matchup against the Utah Jazz.
The suspension stems from a physical altercation between Barnes and New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher, 41. The two had gotten into a physical fight at Barnes' ex-wife Gloria Govan's home in Southern California. Govan is a reality TV star.
Barnes told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne at the time that he went to the house, which is about 15 miles away via car, to check on his twin sons after one of them had told him that "Mommy's friend Derek is here." Barnes reportedly confronted Fisher, who had flown into town on his day off, before the situation escalated.
The police were called but no charges ended up being filed. Barnes had reportedly left the scene when the police arrived. Fisher reported a few minor scratches.
Barnes brought up the altercation last month. Ben Bolch had reported that Barnes said, "We're 2 grown men who should have handled 2 grown men's business, but he wanted to run and tell the cops & NBA."
Barnes also alleged that the New York Post wanted to depict a bad image of him because the news outlet "is run by the New York Knicks."
Barnes and Fisher were teammates from 2010 to 2012 when they played for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Barnes has been averaging 8.5 points so far this season.
