San Bernardino Shootings Takes Terrorism Turn, Killers Family Unaware Of Couple's Radicalization
Investigations into the San Bernardino shootings have hinted at radicalization of the killer-couple, possibly inspired by terror groups like ISIS, which the shooters' families and friends did not see coming.
According to CNN, Tashfeen Malik, the 27-year-old wife of Syed Rizwan Farook pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a Facebook post when Malik and her husband were shooting people in the Inland Regional Center in the city. The post was made through an account with a different name but investigators did not explain how they determined the account was linked to Malik. Officials however think ISIS is not directly involved in the incident.
Malik and her husband burst into a holiday party at the center leaving 14 dead and several others injured. Investigators also suspect that some people that Farook had interacted with in past few months may have a role to play in shootings.
Law enforcement agencies found ammunition and explosives at Farook's townhouse, which they believe indicates elaborate planning behind the shooting and radicalization of the couple.
Farook's sister and brother-in-law who spoke to NBC said they did not think he and the couple was capable of killing people. His brother-in-law Farhan Khan called him a bad person but said he did not think Farook could be radicalized. Farook's sister revealed that her sister-in-law Malik was in the US for only two years before the couple was killed in a stand-off with the police, and that the couple left their six-month daughter behind before heading out for the kill.
