Jimmy Kimmel and The Killers Team Up for One Hilarious Song
Every year since 2006, the Las Vegas rock band, The Killers writes a Christmas song for charity. In the past, the American band has invited several big names, such as Elton John and Neil Tennant, to help out. This year, The Killers decided to invite a nonmusical guest, fellow Las Vegas native, Jimmy Kimmel.
"I was flattered when they asked me to be a part of it this year. So we got together, we kicked some ideas around, and the result, I believe, is what may very well be the greatest holiday song ever recorded by non-chipmunks," the late night host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" jokingly said on his show.
In the music clip, which debuted on Kimmel's show last night, you can see Kimmel throwing out several ideas for the theme of the song. He suggests using the famous term "YOLO," which stands for "you only live one" as well as "haters gonna hate hate hate," a lyric from Taylor Swift's song, Shake It Off.
In the end, Kimmel and The Killers decided on creating a musical story about a coal named Joel who Santa Claus decided to give as a present to a naughty boy. In the clip, Joel expresses his desires to stay in the North Pole, where he is happy. Despite this, Santa Claus brings Joel along with him and leaves Joel with the boy, who ends up accepting Santa Claus' decision. Joel then turns into a diamond to make the boy happy. The lyrics are:
"Joel Joel the lumpy coal, knew what he must do.
He said: 'Now I know the reason why I got sent to you.
Cause when a person hurts inside, it turns him hard and cruel,
But I know how to make your pain into a precious jewel.
So take me in your hand, young man, and squeeze with all your might.
Let's turn your pain and anger into something that shines bright.'"
"We watched Back To The Future in Soho in London one night. And of course [the soundtrack is] doused in Huey Lewis. It made me think how much we loved his voice growing up," the lead singer of the band, Brandon Flowers, said to NME. "Somehow, along the way, Huey lost his involvement. Jimmy had this idea of a lump of coal who goes to a bad kid and gives up his life and becomes a diamond. It's kind of genius that it hasn't been used."
The song, titled "Joel, the Lump of Coal," is available for purchase on iTunes. The song is selling for $1.29 and all of the proceeds will go directly to the (RED) Campaign, which was founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006. The campaign aims to encourage people and businesses to get involved with the fight against AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
