Golden State Warriors Become First Team in NBA to Start 16-0
The Golden State Warriors have done something that no other team in NBA history has ever accomplished: win 16 games in a row at the start of the season.
The last NBA teams to get to 15-0 were the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and the 1993-94 Houston Rockets. The Warriors earned their 16th win Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 2015 NBA MVP Stephen Curry finished the night with 24 points and nine assists. He has been averaging 32.1 points with 5.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds so far this season. Draymond Green had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the 111-74 win.
"We're a young team, very hungry and we've got great veterans that won't let us be complacent," Klay Thompson, who had 11 points, said. "Hopefully it sends a message throughout the league that we're here to stay for a while."
"It's a special accomplishment any time you can do something that hasn't been done before," Curry said. "It's not going to be total dominance for 82 games."
The Warriors, who are the reigning NBA Champions, have been dominating the league without their head coach Steve Kerr, who took a leave of absence to recover from his back surgeries.
Despite the great start to the season, Luke Walton, who has been acting as the interim head coach, knows that their streak will end sometime.
"Anything's possible," Walton said. "Eventually we will lose. It's natural to let down at some point."
The win also marked the 20th straight regular season win since last season, making the Warriors the sixth team in league history to accomplish that feat. The Warriors also have a 27-game wining streak at home. Upcoming records that the Warriors could chase down are 33 straight wins or an overall total of 72 wins.
The Lakers, on the other hand, dropped to 2-12. Kobe Byrant shot just one-of-14 with four points.
"I could have scored 80 tonight, it wouldn't have made a damn difference," Bryant said. The 37-year-old added that he believes the Warriors could win 33 straight.
"Yeah, they could do it - because they're good," Bryant said. "It's a very young league, and they've managed to put together a team of extremely intelligent players and extremely versatile players, and great shooters. And so I see no reason why they couldn't continue to extend (the record)."
The Warriors will try to get win no. 17 this Friday against the Phoenix Suns at 9:30 p.m. ET.
