Drake Victimized By Online Death Hoax Notice
Drake, dead? The Canadian name has been all over social media lately as an unknown online user posted that he died in a car crash over the weekend.
According to Complex, the hoax is started by 4chan website and a user who posted 'Operation Drake, as what they called' on the singer's Hotline Bling video.
It was posted in Buzzfeed community which was then spread elsewhere until it reached the Yahoo News front page before the publication removed out. An editor then left a note confirming the falsity of the item
The singer's Wikipedia entry was also changed back then when the hoax came out declaring he died on November 22.
This is not the first time that the hiphop artist received a death hoax. Back in February 2012, news that the Back to Back singer died came up in the heels of another hoax stating Eddie Murphy's death, IB Times recalled
In recent years, some online trolls also claimed that Avril Lavigne had died and was replaced by an actress. Will Smith, Ricky Martin, Miley Cyrus and Willie Nelson have also been victimized by such rumors, DJ Booth reported.
Meanwhile, the artist's Hotline Bling video drew out an ample amount of memes online. One of these memes is from Dave Valeza who claimed that the rapper posted it on his Twitter account but never acknowledged its creator, MTV said.
"A tag or @ mention directing to my Instagram account would've been fine. Artists depend on visibility. Artwork posted without credit hurts that," Valeza said in his Twitter explaining Drake's failure to give him credit.
