Facebook hopes to lessen the pain of breakups by allowing users letting see less of their former flames without the awkwardness involved in iunfriending or blocking.

The social media giant announced on Thursday that they were trying a set of new rules first in the US which would allow users to define how they want to interact with former partners after the relationship has ended, according to Tech Crunch.

"When people change their relationship status to indicate they are no longer in a relationship, they will be prompted to try these tools," Facebook informed in a news release.

Users can choose to hide their partners' pictures and profile so they do not appear up in their News Feed and when the latter are tagged. Media from formers partners can also be restricted by hiding posts from a particular user. Most importantly, Facebook is letting users untag their profiles from posts with their former flames.

"We're starting to test these tools today in the US on mobile, and we'll make changes and roll them out further based on people's feedback. All of these tools are optional, and people will be able to access them in the help center anytime," Facebook said.

"This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives. We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control."
