Hillary Clinton says 'Time for Delay is Over,' U.S. must Fight the Islamic State
Hillary Clinton is urging the United States to take a stand against the Islamic State by approving the use of military force against these terrorists in Syria and Iraq.
The 2016 Democratic presidential hopeful stated that ordering for more airstrikes will show "that the U.S. is committed to this fight," CNN reported.
Clinton added in the speech she made at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City on Thursday, "The time for delay is over. We should get this done... This is no time to be scoring political points. We must use every pillar of American power, including our values, to fight terror."
Clinton's statements come nearly one week after the Islamic State carried out massive shootings and bombings in Paris that led to 129 fatalities. Since the deadly events, many world leaders have taken a stance with France.
Clinton stressed the importance of having an international anti-ISIS coalition that will work with regional forces, such as Sunnis and Kurds, to eliminate ISIS's power and take back territory. The former Secretary of State also pushed for more "flexibility" when it came to mobilizing U.S. Special Operations forces.
Clinton, however, did not recommend the U.S. start a new ground war in Middle East.
On top of adding air and drone strikes, Clinton called for new efforts to convince neighboring and European nations to also take a harsher stand against ISIS that would ideally cut off supply lines to the terrorist group.
"We need people to turn against the common enemy of ISIS," Clinton said and added that efforts to dismantle new terrorist networks need to be strengthened.
Prior to the speech, Clinton and President Barack Obama have been heavily criticized for their failed attempts to contain ISIS.
"Hillary Clinton can't walk away from President Obama's failing ISIS strategy because she helped craft it and even praised it," Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Short said in a statement reported by USA TODAY. "The fact Hillary Clinton said President Obama was 'making the right moves' combating ISIS while it was making gains across the Middle East shows she's the wrong person to take on and defeat this growing terrorist threat."
The Obama administration has sent U.S. forces to aid Iraqi troops and Syrian groups and has continued to refuse to send American soldiers to fight in the front lines.
Clinton also echoed Obama's stance on taking in Syrian refugees. After the Paris attacks, dozens of Republican state senators have voiced their concerns over accepting refugees, with many of them stating that they do not want refugees in their states.
"Turning away orphans, applying a religious test, discriminating against Muslims, slamming the door on every Syrian refugee -- that is just not who we are," Clinton said. "It would be a cruel irony indeed if ISIS can force families from their homes and then also prevent them from ever finding new ones."
Clinton is latest candidate to discuss her plans in combating ISIS. Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has stated that he would send ground troops if needed.
Democratic hopeful, Bernie Sanders, has yet to address the terrorism issue.
