Doris Payne, International Jewel Thief, Arrested For Stealing
She is 85, but famed jewel thief Doris Payne has been culling jewellery around the world for about 50 years.
This elderly lady was again caught and arrested on Friday after she was seen trying to steal earrings from Saks Fifth Avenue, Phipps Plaza in Buckhead.
She was caught by the security when she slipped a pair of $690 Christian Dior earrings inside her pocket at an Atlanta Saks Fifth Avenue and was leaving the building, police told WSB-TV late Monday.
She was caught by a surveillance video and reported by a loss prevention specialist, a police report said. She was booked by the officers of the Atlanta Police Department and arrested for shoplifting.
"I think these officers just thought it was a run of the mill shoplifting. They took the woman into custody and short time thereafter they get notice that another jurisdiction had a warrant for her and she was an international thief," said Sgt. Warren Pickard, according to the New York Daily News.
"She put them in her pocket and politely walked out of the store," Pickard continued.
This star of her own documentary "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne," had become infamous when she tried to pilfer a 10.5-carat diamond in Monte Carlo years ago.
"According to my research, when she was 20 years old, she started committing crimes," Pickard said.
She is a lifelong thief, and her arrests go right back to the 1960s. She had been in the radar in Charlotte, N.C., for taking a ring worth more than $30,000.
She was caught when she was trying to steal a diamond ring in Oct. 2013 from a California jewelry store, reports the Desert Sun. She had been on probation in Los Angeles then, and almost three years "removed from a conviction in San Diego".
Right now she is in "good spirits", though her health is a bit of a worry.
And why not, when she is 85!
