Federal Report Calls For End Of LGBT 'Conversion Therapy'
A new report released on Thursday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) gave out a call to end the LGBT conversion therapy, which had earlier been used to "treat" lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender youth.
Many people still believe that humans can change their sexual preference, while earlier, homosexuality was seen as a kind of curable "mental disorder", according to The Huffington Post.
However, such a theory is not based on research and cannot be applied to the 21st century, hence it should be ended, according to HNGN.
"Directing the child or adolescent to conform to any particular gender expression or identity, or directing parents and guardians to place pressure on the child or adolescent to conform to specific gender expressions and/or identities, is inappropriate and reinforces harmful gender stereotypes," the report reads.
Hence, such a 'conversion' is not permitted in four states and in the District of Columbia, as well as 21 other states along with the U.S. Congress. Authors of the report target for "federal regulatory action" so the LGBT conversion therapy is not applied to minors.
It is just religious "training" not license that enables LGBT conversion, according to Dr. Jack Drescher, an expert based in New York City.
People need "to be informed about the potentials for harm" that conversion therapy may lead to, Drescher added, according to Fox News
