On October 13, 2015, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the theme for next year's Met Gala or also known as the Oscars of Fashion will be futuristic. According to Vogue, the theme will be Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Next year's Met Gala will be on May 2, 2016.

The co-chairs for the Met Gala 2016 are actor and musician Idris Elba, Apple's Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive, Pop Superstar Taylor Swift, and American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The honorary chairs are designers Karl Lagerfield, Nicolas Ghesquiere and Muccia Prada. They will explore the relationship between machine made and manmade fashion. The haute couture items will feature techniques such as embroidery, pleating and lace work along with new fashion technologies like laser cutting, thermo shaping and circular knitting. There will also be workshops like 3D printing where the guests can see the designs take shape.

"Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made," said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met's Costume Institute. "But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other."

Wintour said in a video showcasing her 2016 Spring Collection highlights, one of the big messages from Paris shows is the "influence of technology on fashion", especially at Louis Vuitton. Also, many high-end fashion designers are using new technological ways in their craft.

The show will feature more than 100 fashion pieces that are both haute couture and ready-to-wear. Met Gala 2016 is sponsored by Apple.
