U.S. takes President Cup in dramatic final

The United States won the "Ryder Cup of Asia" with a close finish on the 18th hold of the last singles match in one of the most exciting golf tournaments of the year.

The Presidents Cup, pitting Team USA against Team Asia, went down to the final singles match on Sunday as the Americans barely held on to their early lead in the three tournament to finally win by just 15.5 points to 14.5.

U.S. captain Jay Haas broke into tears when his son, Bill Haas, holed out on the 18th in the nail-biting final match to beat local hero Bae Sang-Moon and guarantee that the Cup went to the United States for the sixth consecutive time.

"A moment I'll never forget," choked out Jay Haas, the only words he could speak after his son won the Cup for the United States

It was heartbreak for the Asian team, who were down 5-to-1 after the first day's doubles of the match-play event at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, South Korea.

"I was very sad and disappointed," said Bae in the post-tournament interview. "I wanted to make the winning point, but at the end of the day, we lost."

Bae, the only Korean in the tournament in his country, hit a heavy chip to the 18th in his decisive match with Bill Haas. The gallery groaned as the ball rolled back right to his feet. Bae put his hand over his face, then recovered and chipped 12 feet past the hole.

A minute later, Bill Haas blasted out of a bunker, to land the ball eight feet from the hole. Bae conceded the putt, as tournament protocol demands in international events, and that was the end of the match and tournament.

Team Asia, including Australia's Adam Scott and veteran Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, had hoped to break the hex and take home the Cup, but it was not to be. Asia has won once, shortly after the tournament began in 1994 and there was one tie in the 11 events.

"A moment I'll never forget," said U.S. captain Jay Haas. The competition will resume in the United States in 2017.
