The latest controversial statement from the Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump that has hit the headlines is the declaration that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, accused of "deserting his post" while touring Afghanistan, deserved execution, according to The Washington Times.

"We're tired of Sgt. Bergdahl, who's a traitor, a no-good traitor, who should have been executed," said Trump. "Thirty years ago he would have been shot."

He was addressing a crowd at a Las Vegas casino and hotel Thursday.

However, Eugene Fidell, who is working to defend Bergdahl, denounced Trump's remarks that have "become a broken record on this subject," and that "if he took the time to study what actually emerged at the preliminary hearing he would be singing a different tune," according to The Week.

Referring to the media outlets and politicians with disgust, Trump said that Rep. Kevin McCarthy had left the race for House Speaker due to his own influence, Fox News  said.

He called up a Hispanic woman and took some photographs with her.

Bergdahl was accused of "misbehavior" and "desertion" in March. The U.S. Army has discussed the issue of his court-martial.
