Listeria Fears Prompt Whole Foods Markets To Recall Premium Cheese

Premium food retailer Whole Foods Market has recalled a brand of its cheese products nationwide after its cheese tested positive for bacterial contamination.

According to CBS Local, routine testing by FDA found Listeria monocytogenes in a whole uncut wheel of cheese. Following testing, the company announced recall of one of its blue cheese brands, Papillion Organic Roquefort cheese, from stores across the country. Listeria can cause serious sometimes fatal infections in the young, old and the immune-compromised. Healthy adults may experience high fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea.

The company announced that cheese with sell by all dates may be affected, while informing that the affected products have scale label that begin with PLU 029536.

"The recalled cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels. Whole Foods Market decided to recall the cheese after routine sampling conducted by the FDA found Listeria Monocytogenes in a whole, uncut wheel of the cheese," the company said in a news release that was also shared by FDA.

"Consumers who have purchased this product from Whole Foods Market stores may bring their receipt to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions should contact their local store or call 512-477-5566 ext. 20060 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST."
