Twilight celebrates 10th anniversary with a gender-swapped rewrite
Stephanie Meyer celebrated Twilight's 10th anniversary in a very unique way. The author rewrote Twilight with gender-swapped characters. On October 6, 2015, the same day the book was released, Meyer revealed on Good Morning America that the new book is entitled "Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined," where Edward Cullen is Edythe and Bella Swan is Beaufort or Beau for short.
"I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary, and the publisher wanted like a foreword, and I thought, 'Well, maybe something more interesting,' " she said.
"It's always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be...in distress. We don't have the powers. I thought, 'What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does?' And, you know, it's about the same." Meyer explained.
Fans are also requesting for a New Moon rewrite as well but then Meyer said, "I think that this is just one version with Beau," Some are even requesting for Life and Death to be a film as well in which the author replied, "I don't really see that happening and a lot of the people I'd put in it would be like Grace Kelly so it's a little too late for some of my first choices."
The book starts out the same, although some of the characters' personalities are slightly different. "It really is the same story because it's just a love story and it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl, it still works out." The Twilight author concludes.
Twihards are surprised when Life and Death was released as they were expecting Midnight Sun, the Twilight retelling from Edward's perspective to be the one released. Midnight Sun already leaked in the internet a few years back. Perhaps fans could expect more surprises in the coming anniversaries?
