‘Fast and Furious 8’ Cast Update: Helen Mirren to Play Mrs. Shaw?
It is no secret that Helen Mirren wants to be a part of the "Fast and Furious" family and according to the rumors, she will most likely get her chance with "Fast 8."
Back in March, Mirren, 70, spoke with Yahoo! Movies about her desire to be a street driver in the highly successful franchise.
"My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie," Mirren said. "My claim to fame is I always do my own driving - I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I'll be in Fast and Furious 8. I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He's a great guy, smart - I love him. It's partly because of him I'd like to be in one, but also the driving. I'd also love to do another Red-type movie, because those are such fun to do.
When Diesel, who produces and stars in the movies as Dominic Toretto, learned about Mirren's comments, he stated that he would love to have her on board.
"Of course I would! Who wouldn't? It's Helen," Diesel said.
Ever since these statements, rumors have surfaced claiming that Mirren could play a villain. What Culture argued that Mirren could play Deckard Shaw's mother. Shaw, who is played by Jason Statham, was the villain in "Furious 7." There were rumors that he might be switching sides in the eighth installment, however.
"Since Jason Statham has confirmed that he's returning for the eighth film despite being locked up, there clearly has to be some sort of narrative explosion that brings him back into play. That might well come in the shape of his formidable mother, a gangster matriarch who turns up for revenge and to reclaim her sons (both of whom remain very much alive)," What Culture theorized. "And she could be played by Helen Mirren, at least if she and Vin Diesel get their way."
Other actresses who have been rumors to be joining the cast include "Orange is the New Black" Ruby Rose and "Paper Towns" Cara Delevingne.
"Fast 8" is still looking for a director. The latest report claims that "Straight Outta Compton's" F. Gary Gray is the heavy favorite. Diesel also revealed that the "Fast and Furious" franchise would be ending with a trilogy.
"Fast 8" will hit theaters on April 14, 2017.
