Police Dog Fired in Oregon for Doing a Shoddy Job
A two- year old Belgian Malinois was dismissed from the Cannon Beach town police force in Oregon for non-performance.
The dog, Cash, was supposed to be the ninth member of the coastal town 's police force but it was not be so.
The young canine, it seems, did not have what it takes to be in the force. He was a little frisky, skittish, afraid of heights and noise and had a slight barking problem.
He did not perform the given tasks like trailing a smell or going after drugs. He did not follow orders to jump over counters to get a catche of drugs or go after suspects. His forte was to stay put and bark aggressively, maybe he thought that was his job profile.
Barking is "fine as an alert, but you can't get anything done when you're trying to get him to find dope and he's just barking in your face," Officer Josh Gregory, the dog's former handler, told The Daily Astorian, reports the Associated Press.
"That's not the temperament we wanted to set for Cannon Beach," Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn said. The department paid $27,000 for Cash. The money was raised under the K-9 officer program.
Officer Gregory and other dog trainer had spent four weeks trying to teach Cash the police moves but he did not respond well.
Cash has been sent back to his former owner Clatsop County Search and Rescue, and th police force is on the lookout for another dog to train.
The force wants another 'happy- to- work' dog whom they will train to replace Cash.
