South Carolina Woman Plunges To Death Over Bridge When She Tries To Help Crash Victim
It was a horrific death for a 29-year-old South Carolina woman, Jessica Nicole Smith, who fell from a bridge when she tried to lend a helping hand to the victim of a truck crash.
It happened at the intersection of Interstate 385 early Saturday, said the cops.
She was a passenger of a car that stumbled upon the wreckage at the bridge. Getting out of it and checking to see if she could help anyone started a series of events, according to Fox News.
She bent over the bridge, in order to call for the victims. She had not found anyone in the cab.
"It is believed she heard a voice, placed one leg over the bridge, and then another, thinking the ground was close," Coroner Parks Evans said, according to NBC News.
"However, she fell 23 feet to the base of the bridge and died," he added.
A man in the truck also jumped down, but survived.
Jessica, a trained nursing assistant, has left behind a nine-year-old, who will now be taken care of by her sister, Hope Smith. Jessica's sister said that her family was "heartbroken and empty" and pledged to take care of her nephew.
"He's going to be OK, because I'm going to make sure of that, but it's going to be tough growing up from the age of nine without your mom. I couldn't imagine that," Hope said, according to the Daily Mail UK.
