New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts Game Preview: Jets can Set a Tone with another Victory
The New York Jets are hoping that their great start to the season will continue into Week 2 when they take on the Indianapolis Colts Monday night.
Even though the Jets did almost everything right in Week's 1 31-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, from running the ball efficiently to keeping the number of interceptions low, they will have to play as well or even better to take down three-time Pro Bowler Andrew Luck and the Colts.
First off, the Jets will have to silence Lucas Oil Stadium as best as they can. In order to do this, the Jets will have to, of course, score early on in the game. How they score, however, will also affect the crowd. Even though long touchdowns can be heartbreaking to watch, slowly working down the field before getting into the end zone can chip away at the crowd even more. Moving down the field slowly can also reduce Luck and the Colts' number of possessions granted that the Jets continue to keep their interceptions low.
On defense, the Jets will have to stop Luck from running his game, which will be a hard feat since Luck has proven time after time that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. In 2014, he recorded 4,761 passing yards and 40 passing touchdowns with three touchdowns on the ground. His completion percentage was at 61.7.
"He does everything," Jets first-year head coach Todd Bowles said. "He's one of those quarterbacks, he's big, he's got size, he can run. He can beat you with his brain, he can beat you with his arm, he can beat you with his feet. He's just a hell of a quarterback. He's probably one of the best in the league. He's easily one of the best in the league, and we've got our work cut out for us."
In order to slow Luck down, the Jets' defense will have to throw the entire offensive line out of rhythm.
Rich Cimini of ESPN.com detailed why a victory would be important for Jets. He wrote:
"This is one of a handful of games in which the Jets will have the disadvantage at quarterback. To make the playoffs, they have to win games like this, proving the rest of their roster is strong enough to beat franchise quarterbacks. It has to be their formula. It's also a chance to do something Rex Ryan did only once in his final two seasons as the Jets' coach -- win two in a row.
The Jets and Colts game will start at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
