The next installment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise will be based on the late Paul Walker's vision.

Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Letty, recently spoke with PEOPLE at the UNITAS Gala Against Sex Trafficking in New York City about "Fast 8."

"[Paul] wanted to bring it back down to the core, which is the racing," Rodriguez, 37, said. "He was always complaining about the special effects and the blue screens."

The movie will try to keep the plot as "true to Paul's wishes." According to Rodriguez, Walker, who died unexpectedly in a car crash in 2013, was not a huge fan of the "exaggerated explosions and crazy plot lines."

She added, "I think that's what Vin [Diesel] meant when [he said] his main focus on the next one will be trying to keep it true to that car audience. Hopefully we'll be able to do that cause it's gotten bigger than ever and you know we also have to stay true to that so it'll be a challenge."

Rodriguez's comments are the only details fans have regarding the plot and direction of "Fast 8" aside from Diesel's statement that the movie will be set in New York.

The rumor mill, however, has been churning. The latest rumors are claiming that "Fast 8" will be focused on adding at least one new female lead to the cast. So far, Ruby Rose from "Orange is the New Black" and newcomer, Cara Delevingne from "Paper Towns" have been linked to the movie. Helen Mirren has also been tied to the film after she vocalized her desire to be in the franchise.

Aside from these three actresses, the rumors are claiming that Eva Mendes might be reprising her role as Special Agent Monica Fuentes. Cody Walker who filled in for his older brother, Paul, in "Furious 7" is rumored to be returning but in another role.

Other actors expected to be reprising their roles include Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Kurt Russell. The full cast line-up, however, has not been revealed and might not be within the near future since the movie is allegedly getting pushed back a bit due to Diesel's filming schedule.

"Fast 8" is scheduled for an April 2017 release.
