New York Yankees Rumors: Yankees to Target Pitching Ace David Price
The New York Yankees will reportedly be one of the many teams who will be going after pitching ace David Price during the offseason.
Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reported that the Yankees, who chose to keep pitching prospect Luis Severino and passed on Price in July, will be very active in trying to sign Price, who will become a free agent after this season. Cafardo reported that the 30-year-old Price could cost up to $210 million over seven years.
The Yankees' starting rotation needs an ace like Price, especially with Mashiro Tanaka and Nathan Eovaldi dealing with injuries. Yankees' ace C.C. Sabathia also has had a very rough season this year, going 4-9 with a 5.16 ERA. During Sabathia's first five years as a Yankee, he had a winning record with at least 14 wins in each of those seasons.
The other teams that will be in contention include the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. The Cubs could be the heavy favorites to sign Price because of Joe Madden, who worked with the pitcher back in Tampa Bay.
Price is currently with the Toronto Blue Jays, who may or may not be in the mix to sign him depending on ownership.
Cafardo wrote:
"Word from team sources is that Price really likes it in Toronto. If new Jays president Mark Shapiro gets the go-ahead from ownership he will likely do all he can to keep him. The Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, Nationals, and Red Sox are teams that could come after him hard."
Price will be starting tonight's game (Sep. 10) against Severino at 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are currently 1.5 games behind the Blue Jays.
