Thousands of exhausted refugees poured into Munich after they clambered on to special trains from Austria's Vienna, to which they were transported from Hungary.

Once they are registered, they could be sent to shelters in Germany.

They were warmly welcomed by the Germans, reported Al Jazeera. "People here have been handing out soft toys, teddy bears for the kids, and you can see the relief on their faces that at least they have arrived safely."

To Nickelsdorf, an Austrian border town, about 2,500 to 3,000 people arrived in the first few hours of Saturday, said the State Police Director Hans Peter Doskozil to the Austria Press Agency (APA), according to CNN.

The migrants walked for long hours all of Friday, before they were driven by 100 buses sent by the Hungarian government. They drove them from the Austrian border from Budapest..

The Austrian chancellor Werner Faymann and German chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to accept the migrants.

"Because of today's emergency situation on the Hungarian border, Austria and Germany agree in this case to a continuation of the refugees' journey into their countries," Faymann said on Friday, according to The Guardian.

Hungary earlier blocked migrants' travel to Western Europe, particularly to Germany, due to a week-long stand-off between the police and the migrants according to news24. It left hundreds stranded at a Budapest rail station.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the ongoing migrant crisis is a "German problem," not a European problem. He also said that Hungary does not welcome Muslim refugees, according to hngn.
