Couple Eats A Piece Of Original Wedding Cake On Every Anniversary Day
It's been 60 sweet years since Ann and Ken Fredericks got married in August 19, 1955, and every year, they eat a piece of the original wedding cake, according to abcnews.
Ann's grandmother baked the dark fruit cake two months before the wedding. She baked three layers so that it could age get decorated by a baker. Having saved the top layer, the Fredericks moisten it with brandy and eat another piece.
Ann, a retired nurse, who is 81 years old at Satellite Beach, Florida, said that she does not deep freeze the cake.
"I mean, dark fruit cake keeps," she said.
On Wednesday, Ann described the cake: "It's a little dry, and -- it doesn't taste bad. I mean, it doesn't have an objectionable taste, but it's a little dry."
They have wrapped and stored the cake in a Maxwell House coffee can, ready for the next anniversary.
They both met at Syracuse University, where she majored in nursing and he studied music. For a few years they lived in New York and then after visiting Ken Fredericks' parents in Florida, they moved in 1968, according to usatoday.
The story is abuzz, which surprises both of them
"I've never gone on Facebook or any of those social media because you know it's ... well, I don't want to spend my time there. I have other things that I have to do," she said.
Ken too was a bit taken aback. "I'm surprised, I think it's kind of silly," he said of the reaction. "Well, it's just something we do and we've been doing it for years."
How do they stick together? Ken explained: "We still love each other. And we have a good, close family and they all love each other and that's about it, I guess."
They are all gathering together with their family on the anniversary weekend for a big celebration. "We just never thought of this as being unusual ... hopefully we'll be able to do it for a few more years," Ann said.
