Ronda Rousey will Fight Former World No.1 Holly Holm
Ronda Rousey, the undefeated UFC bantamweight champion, has announced Holly Holm as her next opponent while on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday.
During her announcement, Rousey only had positive things to say about her opponent.
"I'm going to be fighting Holly Holm, who is actually the most decorated striker we have in all of mixed martial arts," Rousey said. "Not the women's division, not the bantamweight division, like 19-time boxing world champion Holly Holm, was the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound female fighter of the year and definitely my biggest challenge to date so I'm super-excited about it."
Holm, 33, is the former world No. 1 rated boxer from Alburquerque who became a mixed martial arts fighter. Holm signed a deal with the world's largest mixed martial arts promotion last year.
Rousey's record is 10-0 while Holm's record is 9-0 in the MMA and 2-0 in the UFC.
"I prepare for a five-round war every time I get in there," Rousey said. "No one's easy until after you beat them. With Holly Holm, she's the type that is ready to go 12 boxing rounds. She is not the average chick I would fight. She's the best striker I've ever fought and striking is something I learned much later in my career and so I don't ever expect fights to be easy and fast."
The last time Rousey was in the ring, she took out Brazilian Bethe Correia in 34 seconds via a knockout punch on Aug. 1.
The announcement did come as a surprise to many who were hoping that Rousey might be taking on Miesha Tate or Christiane "Cyborg" Justino. Tate was just declared the number one contender after she won her fourth consecutive fight. Tate, however, has not had any success against Rousey, who she lost two twice already.
UFC 195 will take place on Jan. 2, 2016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
