A 45-year old woman who sought treatment for heavy vaginal bleeding was shocked to find her unborn twin was growing inside her.

According to Headlines and Global News, Jenny Kavanagh, a logistics officer from Twickenham visited doctors apprehending problems with a contraceptive coil nearly five years ago. She was told that an unborn twin was growing like a fetus with a face, eye, tooth and long black hair, like hers.

"I feel very lucky that they found it and removed it before it killed me. I try not to think of it too much because I don't want to feel sad about it. If I'm honest, I did feel sad when I first saw it, because of the size and weight of it, it had already been likened to a baby," Kavanagh said.

"But I try not to feel sad about it. I try to remember that it had no heart and no brain. And that it would have almost certainly killed me if they hadn't found it and removed it. But in one sense there was grief, mixed with happiness. It was like a baby, but I was still glad it was out of me," she said while adding that her mother was saddened when she learnt about her unborn twin.

An unborn or parasitic twin may go undetected for several years. Earlier this year, doctors in the US removed a 26-year-old Indian woman's parasitic twin from her hear. The teratoma was mistaken to be a tumor as it caused symptoms associated with tumor growth.
