Teens Using E-Cigarettes More Likely To Start Smoking

A new study has warned about vaping in teenagers, claiming it could turn increase likelihood of combustible tobacco.

According to The Times of India, the study asked high school students about e-cigarettes and also determined use of combustible tobacco in various forms including traditional cigarettes, cigars and hookahs. Researchers found that there were significant chances of teenagers using combustible tobacco in the year following first time use of e-cigarettes.

"Among high school students in Los Angeles, those who had ever used e-cigarettes at baseline compared with nonusers were more likely to report initiation of combustible tobacco use over the next year. Further research is needed to understand whether this association may be causal," researchers wrote in the study published in the Journal of American Medical Association.

For the study, 2,530 students from ten public high schools in LA who reported not using combustible tobacco at the beginning of 2013. The students were assessed six months and 12 months later in 2014. Researchers found that users of e-cigarettes were more likely to use combustible tobacco.

E-cigarettes vaporize nicotine from liquid contained in capsules. The study's researchers stated that exposure to nicotine is becoming increasingly common among teenagers who have not used combustible tobacco.
