Florida State University campus shooting: Two people shot at library
At least two people were shot dead at a library at the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee by a gunman who reportedly was killed by campus police, according to reports released early Thursday morning.
Campus security confirmed that police were responding to an incident on the school's main campus in Tallahassee as reports swirled on social media of shots fired inside the school's Strozier Library. People identifying themselves as students said they heard gunshots near the library, according to Reuters.
Campus police said the incident was ongoing, but declined to provide more information, and the university urged people to seek shelter and remain indoors.
Meanwhile, an nursing supervisor at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare told the Associated Press that the hospital was treating two people for gunshot wounds early Thursday. The supervisor did not disclose the patients' conditions or whether they were students. Hospital officials had no information about whether they could expect more patients.
Police had not released additional details on the incident.
NBC News spoke to an eyewitness who was at the library at the time of the incident. Steven Dawson, 19, a freshman biology major said he was studying on the library's third floor at the time of the incident. Shortly after 12:30 a.m. ET, someone started shouting about a gunmen in the building. "Everyone just dropped everything and started running," Dawson said. "There are hundreds of computers on the floor right now."
After fleeing down a fire escape, Dawson said he and several others made outside to the side of the library. About 20 seconds later he said he heard nine to 10 gunshots from about 100 feet away near Strozier's entrance. "Everyone took off running," Dawson said. "I've never seen more people screaming and running."
